The CD features Violectra throughout
which we made for Nigel last year to replace his stolen
Violectras ( see below) just in time for rehearsals for the
album.
The recording was made in New York in
November. with Bassist Ron Carter, a member of the
second great Miles Davis quintet, Bitches Brew drummer
Jack DeJohnette, piano theory guru Kenny Werner,
saxophonists Joe Lovano and JD Allen, organist Lucky
Peterson, singer Raul Midon and percussionist Danny
Sadownick all feature on the album.

I
made Nigel a Violectra Trio of two violins and a cello in 1993 for his
European Villans and Heroes Tour. They were custom made to his
requirements and finished in Aston Villa Football colours of Claret and
Blue ( see images below). Two of these violins a 4 string, No. V-14 and a
5 string, No. V-15(which includes a lower viola pitched c string),have
been stolen. The numbers are stamped under the button and D B Johnson is
stamped between the gears, with a silver "Violectra" logo
transfer on peghead behind the nut.

| Also stolen was a new 5 string Violectra , No. V-147 ,I made for Nigel
last year. This Violectra was made of a fantastic figured one -off piece
of quilted maple body and neck with a centre-strip lamination of CLARET
purpleheart wood and dyed BLUE veneers. Willingly, Aston Villa Football
Club provided artwork of their gold lion crest with the Motto "Prepared"which
was made into a full colour transfer placed between the tuner gears. (see

In January 2006 Leila recorded the Shostakovich Violin Concerto No.1 in A minor,
Op.99 live with Sakari Oramo with the City of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra in Birmingham. She will also collaborate with
pianist John Novacek in the studio to record the Sonata
for Violin and Piano, Op. 134. This new release in May
06 will
coincide with the 100 year anniversary of Shostakovich's
birth, and will be released on the Warner Classics
label.
Leila
is featured in THE STRAD
magazine April 2006 issue.
Watch
for news of Leila's concerts playing John Adams
work The Dharma at Big Sur, with her 6
string Violectra copy of her 1724 'del Gesu'.
Recently she
has performed the composition in Sweden and
Holland .A concert is planned with the LSO in
London in Jan 07.

This 'Bass ' is a Violin scale tuned in fifths
down to the lowest pitch of a bass E string (F# B E) This makes the
range within half a tone to a normal double bass which is normally
tuned in fourths i e h G D A E, But more familiar to violin players
in the fifth tuning.
The Bass Schaller tuners are used to
accommodate the innovative strings made by SUPERSENSITIVE STRING CO
in Florida USA.
Extra spacing is allowed on the fingerboard as well
as the roll off Romberg on the lowest string.
A 4 string model C# or
with a more traditional tuning in fourths G D A G could also be
made. Other ideas for a bass Octave violin E A D G or a Octave 5
string E A D G C are possible! |
